The Underdog Wins for Once

I know this video is old. The National Geographic Channel (or NatGeo, because now they're hip) is doing a documentary on this, so I wanted to revisit. I completely didn't remember how intense this was. Watch the whole thing. It only gets better.

I'm a big dork

This right here is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Yes, it's about vampires, and yes, it's told from the point of view of a teenage girl, but dude, seriously, you can just go suck it, because this book, the first in the series, is awesome. The characters aren't just relatable, I found I couldn't stop thinking about them after I'd put them down. And then, after I'd finished all the books presently out, I had to reread them again. These books are that good. So again, I reiterate, suck it.

I originally found this book buried at the back of a shelf in Target. I finished it that first night, and the next night went out and bought the sequel. Unfortunately , I had to wait a couple months before the third installment came out. Worth the wait. Now everyone's talking about the thing.

Now, I'm reading about it online, and wouldn't you know there's a big debate over which is better: Twilight or Harry Potter. Now, I love Harry as much as the next girl, but honestly, Twilight kicks Harry's scrawny butt.

So today, I find out that a movie is being made of Twilight. At first I'm like, oh, this is totally gonna suck, but then, watching the snippet from MTV News, I'm not so sure. Maybe it'll be good. And maybe it'll ruin what's become my favorite series. I sincerely hope not.

Wannit!

Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City had a substance abuse problem: shoes. I have a similar problem: books. Which is unfortunate, when you're broke-ass like I am. I want these, dammit, and, as a princess, feel that I am entitled to whatsoever I desire. Suck it if you disagree.

Monday Morning Big Word

I present to you the Monday Morning Big Word: lilliputian.

What does this lyrical word mean, you ask? Why, it means "a really small person". And I don't mean small in the metaphorical sense, I mean small in the literal sense. A small person. Like, the little people in Gulliver's Travels.

On the excessive use of profanity

All right. I get it. Truly I do. You're angry, and things aren't going your way, and you wish people would just stop and realize how STUPID they are. But honestly, do you truly need to use profanity that much? I mean, I do think a single shit here, or a bit of fuck there, is acceptable. I think, when using profanity, a little goes a long way. But when you say things like "that fucking fucker fucking fucked up the whole fucking thing", the profanity kind of loses its power.

I was just reading a blog, which will remain nameless in order to protect the innocent, and it used the word "fucktard". A lot. More than necessary.

So, please, people, if you're going to curse, by all means, curse. I lived in a dorm, I can curse like a trucker if the situation calls for it, but let's try to bring some class to it, shall we? Hmm?

Literature Review

So, I picked this book up in the airport in Rochester, NY, while I was waiting for my flight back to NYC. Took me a while, but I finally got around to reading it. The book had great reviews, and the summary on the back was catchy. It's written by a Brit, and I usually love British humor. So, I was looking forward to a good read.

Honestly, it was all right. Not great, certainly not horrible. All right. It's about an old man who finds this mole on his thigh, automatically assumes it's cancer, thinks he's about to die, so decides to go crazy. In the meantime, his daughter is getting married, his son is gay and his wife is having an affair. Even writing this now, I think, hey, that sounds like a great book! Honestly, though, the summary of the book was a better read than the book itself. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice book. A good one for your parents to read. Not edgy, though, which is what I think I was expecting. It's a good book for when you want to read about normal, every day problems. It's a good beach read.

Anyhow, go ahead, read it. Don't be too excited about it, though. You'll get your hopes up, only to think, oh, is that it? Kind of like sleeping with the guy who all the girls say is the best in bed, only to find out he's a one trick pony, and a two minute man to boot. Good for a role in the hay, but nothing you'd write home about.

I'll let you know what I think of my next book, "An Abundance of Katherines", once I've finished.
