Overheard Conversation

On the bus this morning, I overheard an UES woman explaining to her 5 year-old daughter about shaking hands.

Mom: And what hand do you shake with?

Child: (holding up her left) This one!

Mom: No, which hand do you write with?

Child: (holding up her left) This one!

Mom: No, no one writes with their left hand. That's impossible. You write with your right.

Child: Sometimes I write with this one.

Mom: No, no one writes with their left hand. No one. It's im-poss-ible.

Me: (because I'm cranky and hate when people lie to their children) Why are you lying to your child?

Then I got off the bus, 'cause I'd reached my destination.

Yes, I know that I usually don't say anything to people about their children, and I always butt out of conversations, but give me a break. That child's going to grow up with a complex.

UES = Upper East Side. The waaaaaayyyy snooty section of Manhattan.
